Each semester, our students participate in the Global Engagement Colloquium where they reflect on what it means to engage with the world thoughtfully and ethically, understand and navigate uneven power dynamics, and build relationships with individuals and communities, and to consider questions of reciprocity and accountability.
To fulfill this requirement, students complete an approved experience. Some examples include volunteer work, relevant internships, critical study abroad, international research programs, etc. They then participate in the Global Engagement Colloquium, a dedicated space for students to collectively reflect on their engagement, make connections between the conceptual and the concrete, and raise critical questions that have emerged from your specific experiential encounter. Through this class, students produce a reflection of their experience. Some of these reflections have been submitted to this archive.
This is one of two projects that I completed for my internship at Grupo de Mujeres Sacuanjoche, a women’s nonprofit in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Without any foundation to start with besides example brochures and learning materials from my workplace, I began doing research on the prevalence of dating violence in Nicaragua, how it’s defined, and what the recommended process for leaving an abusive relationship safely. By doing this research on the internet and through the materials from my organization, I gained a better understanding of how to organize the brochure. I not only learned about the news headlines and statistics of dating violence in Latin America, I feel that I learned a critical skill that is necessary when working with an educational organization – how to effectively communicate information in a way that interesting and easy to digest. GMS can’t travel everywhere in Nicaragua to teach on these issues of gender violence, but through the use of brochures, information can be spread anywhere and everywhere. — Leigh-Anna Nielsen

GLUE @ THE NEW SCHOOL
The New School’s interdisciplinary undergraduate programs in Global, Urban and Environmental Studies (GLUE) form an academic laboratory for students to delve into the manifold ways in which global forces are redefining our cities and our ecologies. Within a project-centered curriculum students develop expertise through one of our undergraduate majors and a suite of graduate programs. Students learn to synthesize and creatively employ concepts and skills from social sciences, design, and humanities, and to use this knowledge to impact their world.
