{"id":873,"date":"2018-03-12T21:40:56","date_gmt":"2018-03-12T21:40:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs-test.newschool.edu\/glue\/?page_id=873"},"modified":"2023-04-04T20:23:25","modified_gmt":"2023-04-04T20:23:25","slug":"major-requirements-global-studies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs-test.newschool.edu\/glue\/homepage\/global-studies\/major-requirements-global-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Major &amp; Minor Requirements &#8211; Global Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Our requirements are designed to allow students flexibility in choosing courses that best serve their academic, professional, and personal goals while giving them structure to think carefully about their curricular choices and gain the experience and skills to prepare them for proactive, knowledgeable and sensitive engagement with global issues.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>MAJOR<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The BA in Global Studies consists of:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Two core courses, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c(Dis)Order and (In)Justice: Introduction to Global Studies\u201d and \u201cGlobal Economies: Understanding Global Capitalism,\u201d which introduce students to key issues and perspectives in Global Studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Two Knowledge Base electives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, survey courses at the 2000 level or above that introduce a field, phenomenon, and\/or method of exploring our world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Five Global Challenges electives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, higher level seminar courses that allow students to gain more depth in a given subject. At least three must be in your chosen cluster (see descriptions).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><b>Foreign Language requirement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to demonstrate proficiency sufficient for living and working in another context, satisfied through coursework or a proficiency test.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><b>Global Engagement requirement <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">involving volunteer work, internship, self-designed research, activism, and\/or study abroad with faculty approval, followed by a 2-credit colloquium in which students connect their experience to their academic work, and reflect on ethical engagement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A<\/span><b> Collaborative Research Seminar,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a small seminar course taken in junior year, which offers advanced methodological training with practitioners and\/or non-profits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A<\/span><b> Senior Capstone project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Students complete an individual project over the course of one year under close faculty supervision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>MINOR<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Global Studies minor requires the <\/span><b>two core courses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>one Knowledge Base elective<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><b>three Global Challenge electives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, as above. Our Collaborative Research seminars are also open to minors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>CLUSTERS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Global Challenge electives are grouped into four clusters:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Places, Peoples, and Encounters (PPE)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This cluster focuses on the relationship between global structures, multiple forms of knowledge, identities, and lived experiences. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Courses link the global and the local through an emphasis on how structures affect everyday life under globalization, and how people across a variety of contexts understand, negotiate, and resist them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Markets and States, Networks and Hierarchies (MS)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This cluster concerns how the global is \u201cordered,\u201d especially through the global economy and the nation-state system with its international institutions and structures. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Courses explore the tensions between hierarchies and networks, state and non-state actors, and rules and exceptions, critically evaluating the assumptions, interests, and values behind the orders and alternatives that structure our field of action.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Rights, Justice, and Governance (RJG)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This cluster examines the challenge of achieving global justice and its attendant attempts to justly govern global flows of people, goods, money, and information. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Courses offer critical perspectives on the complexities and contradictions of top-down interventions and institutions of law, development and aid, and memory, justice and reconciliation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Urban, Media, Environment (UME)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This cluster focuses on how the organization of space, dissemination of information and media, as well as changes in the environment pose new global challenges at scales beyond the regulation and power of formal institutions or local actors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Courses familiarize students with new methodologies to understand these challenges.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note:\u00a0Be sure to check with your advisor to receive up-to-date information or further clarification on Major &amp; Minor Requirements.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our requirements are designed to allow students flexibility in choosing courses that best serve their academic, professional, and personal goals while giving them structure to think carefully about their curricular&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":29,"featured_media":0,"parent":180,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-873","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/Pawx0u-e5","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs-test.newschool.edu\/glue\/wpjson\/wp\/v2\/pages\/873","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs-test.newschool.edu\/glue\/wpjson\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs-test.newschool.edu\/glue\/wpjson\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs-test.newschool.edu\/glue\/wpjson\/wp\/v2\/users\/29"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs-test.newschool.edu\/glue\/wpjson\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=873"}],"version-history":[{"count":32,"href":"https:\/\/blogs-test.newschool.edu\/glue\/wpjson\/wp\/v2\/pages\/873\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3138,"href":"https:\/\/blogs-test.newschool.edu\/glue\/wpjson\/wp\/v2\/pages\/873\/revisions\/3138"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs-test.newschool.edu\/glue\/wpjson\/wp\/v2\/pages\/180"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs-test.newschool.edu\/glue\/wpjson\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=873"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
