In this virtual Humanities NOW conversation, we’ll discuss the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine to provide intellectual, historical, and personal context for the outbreak of war and resurgence of colonialism in Europe. We’ll discuss the outlines of ideology that is driving Putin’s invasion, national identity and the role of language in the conflict, the refugee crisis, as well as Russian dissent and the unfolding scenario of potential indictments of war crimes against Russia.

We’re honored to be joined by our esteemed panelists:

Andrey Ivanov, Associate Professor, History, UW-Platteville

Anna Tumarkin, Director, Russian Language Program, UW-Madison

Francine Hirsch, Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor, History, UW-Madison

Kirill Ospovat, Assistant Professor, Slavic, UW-Madison

Moderated by Russ Castronovo, Director, Center for the Humanities and Tom Paine Professor of English and Dorothy Draheim Professor of American Studies, UW-Madison

April 13 at 7 pm

This is a virtual event (Zoom); please register in advance here.

For over a month, we’ve witnessed the brutal attack by Russian forces on the people of Ukraine.
