Welcome to the Photo Gallery of TCDS’s Johannesburg Democracy & Diversity<\/em> Institute in January 2012!<\/p>\n

Forty students, from New York’s the New School and a number of universities throughout Africa, convened at the University of Johannesburg, the new host of TCDS’s Democracy & Diversity<\/em> Institute<\/strong> in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Students were required to take two of four offered courses, to engage in meaningful dialogue on a variety of subjects. The participants varied from undergraduates (3), graduate students (26), and post-graduate lecturers (6).<\/p>\n

The courses that were offered were the following:<\/p>\n

“Race and Modernity: Constellations of Place and Identity in Africa”<\/strong>
\n– Taught by Jacob Dlamini (Yale University) and Melissa Steyn (University of Witwatersrand)
\n“Romancing Violence: Nations, Boundaries, Bodies”<\/strong>
\n– Taught by Elzbieta Matynia (NSSR) and Shireen Hassim (University of Witwatersrand)
\n“New Democracies, Old Questions”<\/strong>
\n– Taught by Lawrence Hamilton (University of Johannesburg) and Laurence Piper (University of Cape Town)
\n“Shifting Power in the Global Economy: Rethinking Development Strategies”<\/strong>
\n– Taught by Stephen Gelb (University of Johannesburg), Teresa Ghilarducci (NSSR), Richard McGahey (NSPE)<\/p>\n

In addition to the courses, the institute went on study tours to:
\nMaropeng’s the Cradle of Humanity, the Central Methodist Church, Constitution Hill, the Apartheid Museum, SoWeTo and the Hector Pietersen Museum, as well as tours within the city.<\/p>\n

There were also informational talks and film screenings, such as:<\/p>\n

– A conversation with Anton Harber<\/strong>, a co-founder of South Africa’s premier newspaper, the Globe and Mail;
\n– A conversation with Adila Hassim<\/strong>, an activist lawyer from Section 27<\/em>, a nonprofit organization;
\n– An evening with Bishop Paul Verryn<\/strong> of the Central Methodist Church;
\n– A film screening of Rewind, a documentary on the making of a Cantata about South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission followed by a discussion with the filmmaker Liza Key<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
